Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be a lot of fun: discovering a new skill, getting a great workout, and spending time with people who are happy to see you on the mat. At SBG Bend, our women’s-only BJJ program brings those experiences together in a safe, welcoming space where women can train, make friends, and grow more confident in their abilities.
Our women’s-only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in Bend welcome beginners and experienced students alike. With supportive female coaches, clear instruction, and supervised practice, you have a place to learn at your level and enjoy the process. You can arrive curious, excited, or a little nervous. We’ll help you get started.
A welcoming place to start
Your first class is a chance to meet your coaches and training partners, learn some fundamentals, and experience what jiu-jitsu feels like. Our coaches explain the movements and guide you through practice with a partner. Each step gives you something manageable to work on as you become more comfortable.
Women come to BJJ with different fitness levels, ages, experiences, and goals. Some want an engaging way to exercise. Some are interested in self-defense. Others want a new challenge or a community they can look forward to seeing each week. There is room for all of those reasons here.
If you’re returning after time away or already have experience, the program also gives you opportunities to refine your technique and develop your game alongside other women.
Room to develop your whole game
Jiu-jitsu offers a wide range of skills to explore. You learn to escape difficult positions, control your balance, maintain a position, and apply submissions. Practicing with other women gives you opportunities to work through those different parts of the game and discover how they fit together.
SBG coach Leah Taylor described this benefit in her 2017 essay on women’s-only jiu-jitsu. In the women’s classes she coached in Portland and Montana, she observed students attempting more attacks, spending more time in top positions, and moving through more exchanges with one another. Those opportunities helped them work on technical details and expand their skills.
At SBG Bend, supportive coaching and thoughtful practice help you explore the same fundamentals that make BJJ such a rewarding art. Women’s-only training can remain a valuable part of your jiu-jitsu for as long as you enjoy it, whether you train exclusively in these classes or also participate in our co-ed programs.
Build confidence through real experience
One of the most satisfying moments in BJJ is feeling a movement begin to work. An escape becomes smoother. Your balance improves. You recognize a position that once felt unfamiliar and know what to do next. Small experiences like these give you concrete reasons to trust your growing ability.
SBG’s approach to training is built around Aliveness: timing, energy, and motion. You practice with a partner who moves and responds, so you can experience how a skill works. Coaches introduce resistance progressively, keeping the practice appropriate to the task and the students.
Through SBG’s I-Method, you first learn a movement, then practice it in a focused exercise with progressive resistance, and finally connect it to a broader exchange. For example, one partner might practice maintaining a position while the other works on an escape. Both have a clear goal and an opportunity to improve.
Our coaching emphasizes the fundamentals and helps you understand why they work. As you practice, you develop the timing and judgment to apply them. That is the foundation for confidence you can build on, one class at a time.
Enjoy the people as much as the practice
Training together gives you a shared challenge and plenty of reasons to encourage one another. You take turns practicing, help your partner work through a movement, and share the satisfaction when something clicks. There is room for concentration, laughter, and the occasional wonderfully awkward first attempt.
Our women’s-only program brings that spirit of cooperation to the mat. The goal is for each woman to have a worthwhile training experience, with partners who respect her effort and coaches who support her progress. Familiar faces and shared practice can turn a new activity into a part of your week you look forward to.
You can enjoy the workout, the friendships, and the skill itself. Your goals may grow or change as you train, and enjoying class is a great reason to keep coming back.
A culture of care and respect
A safe, supportive training space takes care and attention. Our coaches guide partner practice, explain how to train together, and help students work at an appropriate level. Respecting a tap or a request to stop immediately is a basic part of caring for your training partner.
You have room to learn, make mistakes, take a break, and develop confidence with support. We want training to be something you can enjoy and return to consistently. Looking after one another is part of how we make that possible.
Part of a strong tradition of women in SBG
Women have helped shape SBG as practitioners, coaches, and community builders for decades. That history includes women such as Lily Pagle, Salome Thornton, Leah Taylor, and Kisa Davison, whose work has helped create opportunities for women to learn and train together.
In her account published in SBG’s April 2011 newsletter, Lily Pagle described starting judo at 40 and later earning her BJJ black belt. Enjoyment was central to her story: she kept training because she was having fun. Her experience is a wonderful example of how much a new interest can become part of someone’s life.
Reflecting on SBG’s 2016 women’s camp, Salome Thornton described the shared effort of building a community of women across the organization. She celebrated the coaches, the friendships, and the women who showed up to learn together. Our women’s-only program at SBG Bend carries that same spirit: good coaching, worthwhile training, and a community that welcomes you into the practice.
